Analyzes persuasive strategies employed by 13 student orators in speeches delivered at Interstate Oratorical Contests from and published in "Winning Orations." (PD) Descriptors: College Students, Competition, Content Analysis, Higher Education, Persuasive Discourse, Public Speaking, Rhetorical Criticism, Speeches. The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Since , the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties.

  Several books have been published listing the speeches of the winners of the IOA contest throughout the years. Between and the early s, each college was responsible for publishing its winning speeches but in , the IOA took over this task and has since continued to publish all of the orations presented in "Winning Orations.". Every year, the National Park Service hosts an oratorical contest in the auditorium at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. All students in grades are welcome to participate. The goal of the contest is for students to experience the same transformative power of language that Frederick Douglass experienced as a young man.
